By using more energy-efficient appliances, a lot of energy can be saved and the emission of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants from power plants can be reduced. To further facilitate the public to choose the energy-efficient appliances and raise the public awareness of energy conservation, Hong Kong government is now implementing mandatory energy efficiency labels through the Energy Efficiency (Labeling of Products) Ordinance (Chapter 598) (the "Ordinance") which requires the prescribed products supplied in Hong Kong to be affixed with energy labels to inform consumers of the energy efficiency performance of products.

Hong Kong Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has implemented a voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (EELS) for household and office electrical appliances since 1995. The purpose of the scheme is to provide consumers with energy efficiency data of different products, so as to publicize the energy conservation messages to consumers.At the same time, it also encourages electrical product suppliers to offer customers more energy-efficient products. Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme adopts the "level type" and "confirmation type” labels. Currently, the products applicable to the Voluntary Energy Efficiency Labeling Scheme include the household appliances and office equipment.

Electric dryer, rice cooker, electronic ballast, photocopier, fax machine, multifunctional office equipment, laser printer, liquid crystal display, computer, hot and cold water dispenser and two gas appliances (domestic instantaneous gas water heater and gas cooker)
